SEOUL -- South Korea's bedding manufacturer Evezary has partnered with a state technology institute to develop technologies against sleep disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea. The two sides will set up a sleep research center and work on an artificial intelligence-based solution that assesses the quality of sleep.

According to data released by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST), sleep plays a crucial role in expelling toxic substances from the brain. Insomnia and sleep apnea are regarded as factors that can lead to brain diseases. Market research firm Global Market Insight's data showed that the global sleep tech devices market which stood at $17.9 billion in 2022 is projected to reach $95.2 billion in 2032.

KAIST said in a statement that the research institute will work with Evezary to make a foray into the sleep technology market. The two groups will develop AI-based monitoring solutions for sleep and carry out research on sleep control. Evezary plans to one billion won ($747,384) worth of stocks for joint research projects.

Other South Korean companies are also striving to provide smart sleep-care devices. In May 2023, Samsung Electronics showcased a smartwatch-based sleep care service that offers tips to establish better sleep habits, such as reducing caffeine consumption. Anyone can check the time and quality of their sleep every day through their sleep score displayed on watches.

In January 2023, LG Electronics disclosed "brid.zzz," a solution that analyzes sleep patterns and creates auditory illusions that enable consumers to fall into a deep sleep. Users can listen to different frequencies by wearing wireless earphones weighing about six grams (0.01 pounds) each.
