Wonju said in a statement on March 29 that drones owned by members of a regional drone association will be used to carry out surveillance activities. The unmanned aerial vehicles will be operated during the day only for a month in April, which is a special period to come up with forest fire measures.
Safety drones have been utilized for firefighting operations in South Korea's mountainous areas. In August 2021, rescuers used drones to find two hikers who were lost in the mountains in Chungju some 110 kilometers (68 miles) southeast of Seoul. The drones were connected to a mobile control tower that can relay video feeds from drones and body cameras of rescuers.
In May 2022, drones equipped with cameras and radars were adopted in the southwestern coastal city of Boryeong to prevent safety accidents on a tidal flat where many visitors collect seafood. In 2017, three people died while collecting shellfish on the tidal flat.
