SEOUL -- LG Electronics has received the top sustainability-related awards at an annual event hosted by the United States' environmental protection agency and the Department of Energy, which is in charge of the US energy policy. The ceremony titled "The Energy Star Awards" has been held to reward companies that contributed to the environment and energy sector since 1993.

According to data released by LG, the company has sold Energy Star-certified items every six seconds in North America in 2022. The products had the effect of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 3.7 million tons. The conglomerate added that all certified washing machines and dishwashers sold last year can save more than 100.3 billion liters of water.

"LG is 100 percent committed to its partnership with ENERGY STAR and the EPA to inspire change, improve efficiency and help create a clean energy future," LG Electronics North America CEO Thomas Yoon said in a statement on March 29. Sales of LG's Energy Star-certified products increased by 10 percent from $3.9 billion in 2021 to $4.3 billion in 2022.

Samsung Electronics also won the top prize for the 10th time in recognition of its efforts in increasing the energy efficiency of various products, as well as conducting climate change-related educational programs for teenagers. In 2020, the conglomerate has obtained “Energy Star” certification for 474 products in the U.S.

Samsung uses 100 percent renewable energy at its business sites in the U.S. region. It has reduced the energy use of buildings by 4.7 percent in 2022 from a year ago.
