SEOUL -- South Korea's major telecom company KT showcased a self-driving delivery robot capable of controlling temperature and humidity while delivering food products at Mobile World Congress, an annual mobile device exhibition in Barcelona.

South Korea's robot industry which stood at five trillion won ($3.7 billion) in 2020 is growing at an average annual growth rate of 3.6 percent. Robots are currently used in various sectors including restaurant services, elderly care, and surveillance. In February 2023, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport unveiled its scheme to nurture the logistics sector to establish a same-day nationwide robot delivery infrastructure.

KT said in a statement that the autonomous solution unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 is the first delivery robot that can maintain the fresh features of food items. A cold chain function that can maintain products' low temperatures was adopted.

"The delivery robot showcased this time is for resorts and camping sites. The robot will deliver products when users order through a QR code inside a tent," an unnamed KT official said in a statement on February 28. The company said the cold chain system will be expanded to other service robots used at hotels and hospitals.

KT has rolled out care robots and quarantine robots since it dispatched its first AI-based concierge robot called "N bot" to a Seoul hotel in December 2019. In January 2022, the company partnered with Yandex SDG, an autonomous vehicle development wing of Russia's top web portal service company Yandex, to release a delivery robot by customizing Yandex SDG's six-wheeled robot.
