Girl band TWICE's unit MiSaMo to release first Japanese album

SEOUL -- TWICE, a nine-member K-pop girl band especially popular in Japan, will consolidate its position in the island country through its first unit consisting of three Japanese members -- Mina, Sana, and Momo. The new group called "MiSaMo" will roll out its first Japanese language-based mini album on July 26 to start its new journey.

JYP Entertainment, the group's agency, disclosed an official trailer and photos of Misamo through its official website. "So happy the girls can represent Japan. Let's make Misamo one of the most successful j-pop groups globally," ic2276, a YouTube user, said after the sub unit's trailer was uploaded. The three artists have already gained attention through "Bouquet," an original soundtrack for "Liaison: Children Heart Clinic," a drama series portraying the story of a medical intern at a psychiatric clinic for children.

TWICE, which debuted in 2015, garnered popularity in 2016 with "Cheer Up." On Billboard Japan, the K-pop girl group ranked fifth in the Top Artist category of the 2019 year-end rankings. In February 2020, JYP partnered with Republic Records, an American record label that includes Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande, to diversify the market through TWICE.

JYP has strived to expand its market by working with Republic Records. In July 2022, the South Korean agency unveiled its scheme to collaborate with the American record label to create "America2Korea," an English-speaking girl band with K-pop features. JYP said it would provide intensive training after selecting talented members from English-speaking countries so they can later debut in North America.
