KT establishes data lake for S. Korea's super-fast internet backbone test network

SEOUL -- South Korea's biggest telecom company KT has developed a data lake portal system for the Korea Advanced Research Network (KOREN), a super-fast nationwide internet backbone network specially designed to test future network technologies. The data lake portal will provide information about network malfunctions, abnormal internet data traffic, and irregular optical signals.

A data lake is a centralized data storage area that collects structured and unstructured data generated in a network. Collected data can be later analyzed and processed to identify problems and come up with solutions to solve them. A data lake can be interlinked with an AI-based system for automatic analysis using low-cost storage.

KOREN is South Korea's super-fast internet backbone network used by many research institutes, organizations, and other government bodies for testing and demonstrating internet-related technologies. The backbone was applied with quantum cryptography and AI-based machine learning by other research bodies.

KT said that the company has finished the establishment of a data lake portal system for KOREN. The system which will go operational in early January 2023 will provide various network malfunction-related data to network engineers. The data will later be used for the research and development of network management systems.

"The data lake portal system will become an AI hub which everyone can use freely by lowering the huddle for R&D of AI-based network technologies," KT's corporate communication task force head Lee Seung-ho said in a statement on December 26.
