SEOUL -- LX Pantos, a total logistics company in South Korea, tied up with Air France KLM Martinair Cargo, a key player in the air cargo industry, to cooperate in revitalizing air cargo transportation using sustainable aviation fuel that is produced from sustainable feedstocks and can reduce carbon emissions. Air France KLM's program was launched in 2020 to expand the use of sustainable aviation fuel for shippers and carriers.

Aviation biofuels, or sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), will play an important role in meeting the aviation industry’s carbon reduction targets, but production is limited due to high costs. LX Pantos is the first South Korean company to participate in Air France KLM's SAF program. LX Pantos will support the purchase of SAF used by Air France KLM for air freight transport. Air France KLM will share with LX Pantos the performance of reducing carbon emissions from SAF use.

"The decarbonization of the aviation logistics industry in the future is a key survival factor," LX Pantos Vice President Lee Yong-ho said in a statement on November 15. "We will proactively respond to global environmental regulations and contribute to the decarbonization of the logistics industry through participation in the SAF program."

South Korea's aviation industry wants a government push to make early preparations for the production and use of aviation biofuels. The International Energy Agency wants biofuels to meet more than a quarter of global demands for transportation fuels by 2050. However, the production and consumption of biofuels are not on track to meet the agency's sustainable development scenario. Aviation biofuels are more expensive than fossil jet kerosene.

The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) is a scheme adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in 2016 to lower CO2 emissions for international flights. Aviation biofuel is considered by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to be one of the key elements that would help reduce carbon footprints within the environmental impact caused by the aviation industry.
