SEOUL -- SK Telecom, a leading mobile carrier in South Korea, partnered with e&, a telecom operator based in the United Arab Emirates, to push for a metaverse business in the Middle East. Using e&'s customer analysis and service provision know-how, SKT said it would create metaverse services tailored to customer demands.

Famous buildings and digital costumes reflecting Middle Eastern culture can be actualized in the virtual world where users can interact with others using their own avatars. "We will continue comprehensive cooperation with E& Group in various ICT (information and communications technology) sectors as well as metaverse in the future," SKT's chief business development officer Ha Min-yong said in a statement on October 12.

SKT has tried to incorporate metaverse technology into K-pop content targeting young people. In September 2022, the company created a concert hall for indie music at its metaverse platform, Ifland, to showcase the performances of many indie bands and musicians using volumetric capture technology. In June 2022, a virtual music festival was held using volumetric technology at Ifland so that fans could enjoy surreal content such as performances showing artists.
