SEOUL -- Taihan Cable & Solution, a power cable and grid infrastructure company in South Korea, has approved new investments to upgrade a joint-venture medium and low voltage cable plant in South Africa and nurture it as a forward base for expanding exports to neighboring countries. The investment will be completed by 2023.

Taihan Cable said that the plant named "M-TEC" in South Africa would upgrade medium and low voltage cable production facilities by setting up a new catenary continuous vulcanization (CCV) for insulation and reinforcing a production line that processes the surface of conductors. Medium and low-voltage cables account for about 90 percent of South Africa's underground power cable market.

Taihan Cable said the new investment would help M-TEC boost production efficiency and secure price competitiveness. "M-TEC is a crucial forward base for entering Africa, and this facility investment is projected to increase sales in South Africa and expand exports to nearby countries," an unnamed Taihan Cable official said in a statement on October 12. "We will make all-out efforts to enhance competitiveness in the global market through continuous investment."
