SEOUL -- Cummins, a U.S. producer of engines and power generation products, established a strategic partnership with the operator of nuclear power plants in South Korea, to cooperate in the field of green hydrogen production and utilization. They will demonstrate and commercialize water electrolysis facilities that use electricity to decompose water into oxygen and hydrogen gas.

Under a memorandum of understanding, Cummins and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) will produce green hydrogen using renewable energy, develop business models for hydrogen-based power generation, and jointly seek overseas hydrogen projects.

"KHNP will try to secure clean hydrogen production capacity and excellent competitiveness to dominate the global hydrogen market," KHNP's hydrogen convergence business head Jung Yong-seok said in a statement on September 29.

Cummins' new power business vice president Amy Davis was quoted as saying that his company would use its zero-emission technology for KHNP's green hydrogen business. The US. company has partnered with South Korea's Hyundai auto group to develop electric and fuel cell powertrains initially for the North American commercial vehicle market and explore ways to develop next-generation fuel cell systems.
