SEOUL -- Augmented reality technology was adopted at a store run by Zara, a Spanish apparel retailer, where customers can try on different types of makeup through three-dimensional simulation. The store located at a shopping complex in southern Seoul is Zara's fourth experimental store after Spain's Madrid, Japan's Ginza, and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Augmented reality (AR) filters are computer-generated effects overlapped with the actual images displayed by the camera. Users can freely put on makeup using a device that recognizes their faces and gestures.

Zara said in a statement on May 20 that it has redesigned its store at Lotte World Mall in southern Seoul. The store covering 3,180 square meters allows users to experience various makeup including lipsticks and powder brushes using a digital device equipped with AR filters.

Fashion platform operators have provided different types of content where customers can try on various fashion items. In December 2021, W Concept, the online fashion platform wing of South Korea's retail giant Shinsegae, showcased a virtual reality (VR) showroom where customers can choose and purchase some 140 apparel items from 50 popular brands. Virtual models in showrooms provided styling guides for customers.
