SEOUL -- Seoul will demonstrate smart safety management systems including remote construction site monitoring technology at urban construction sites with a high risk of safety accidents. According to government data, 458 people died at construction sites in 2020 and about 51 percent of fatal accidents were caused by falling.

Smart safety management detects many different safety risk factors in advance using internet of things (IoT) sensors and artificial intelligence (AI). Since February 2022, the capital city has demonstrated various smart safety management systems including closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at construction sites. Smart CCTV systems that can recognize people and their surroundings are often used at large construction sites to monitor for early signs of accidents.

Seoul said in a statement on April 13 that the city will inject more than 30 billion won ($24.5 million) to demonstrate the new smart safety management systems at 32 construction sites. Using a 360-degree video camera, the capital city will inspect construction sites and warn workers in case of an emergency. A heavy equipment security system will warn excavator drivers and workers nearby heavy equipment to move away from working areas. The location of employees will be monitored and the concentration of carbon dioxide and other chemical compounds will be measured.

"The demonstration of smart safety management technology will allow us to safely manage and monitor construction sites without any blind spots," an unnamed Seoul official said in a statement. The smart systems will be adopted at all construction sites in 2023. Seoul will also demonstrate a smart safety hook monitoring system to check if safety hooks are properly locked. In 2021, Seoul also provided safety education classes using virtual reality (VR) devices to raise awareness of 33 types of accident cases. By wearing VR headsets, construction workers could experience various types of safety education through simulated situations.
