SEOUL -- UTAC, a French automotive inspection and testing company, joined hands with South Korea's state research body specializing in automotive parts to strengthen future car competitiveness through technical cooperation.

Korea Automotive Technology Institute (Katech) said that a business agreement on cooperation in future mobility technologies was signed at the French headquarters of UTAC, which delivers a complete range of automotive technical tests. Katech has been involved in a number of projects at home to develop new technologies in autonomous driving and fuel cell vehicles.

The two sides would jointly research and develop future mobility technologies, develop applications for future vehicle technologies, and develop new testing and verification methods for connected autonomous vehicles and automobile cybersecurity.

"Through an active partnership between the two sides, we will contribute to securing connected autonomous driving technologies in South Korea by strengthening the role of a facilitator linking domestic and overseas while enhancing core technology competitiveness in future mobility," Katech head Na Sung-sik said in a statement on April 5.

Katech researchers have stressed that South Korea should work out a legal system or insurance products for accidents caused by self-driving cars because the commercialization of self-driving cars can be achieved only when the anxiety over vehicles, road transportation infrastructure, and legal systems is resolved.
