SEOUL -- South Korea's southern city of Jeonju will establish a prototype drone production center to help small and medium-sized enterprises save costs and time when manufacturing test products before mass production. Building a prototype model is much more expensive than manufacturing a mass-production model.

Building and testing a prototype is essential for the development of electrical devices as parts' compatibility and stability are monitored and tested through the prototype model. However, the creation of a prototype model should be carried out through order-made processes.

Jeonju City said that the city government joined hands with CAMTIC Advanced Mechatronics Technology Institute for Commercialization, a private institute specializing in the development of drone technology, nanofiber technology, and composite material technology, to build a drone prototype manufacturing center with an injection of 1.5 billion won ($1.2 million).

At the center that will be established in Jeonju some 200 kilometers (124 miles) south of Seoul by 2026, drone creators can receive support from mechanical and software engineers. The city would incubate the center so that it would become South Korea's largest hub for drone development and production. "We will provide support for startups so that they can freely produce various parts and software," Jeonju City official Kim Jong-seong said in a statement on April 4.

In South Korea, drones are widely used for carrying out chores that are too dangerous or time-taking for humans. In Seoul, drones are used for monitoring structural damage to factory chimneys and under-bridge structures. Emergency workers use special drones equipped with various sensors to rescue stranded people in the mountains and the sea.
