SEOUL -- Hyundai Electric, an electrical equipment manufacturer and energy solution provider, partnered with GE Renewable Energy, a leading wind turbine supplier, to produce large offshore wind turbines optimized for South Korea's geographical characteristics.

Hyundai Electric said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with GE Renewable Energy, a Paris-based GE unit that focuses on the production of energy from renewable sources. Hyundai Electric's technology will be combined with GE Renewable Energy's know-how in manufacturing offshore wind turbines with a capacity of 12 to 15 megawatts.

Hyundai Electric, affiliated with South Korea's Hyundai shipbuilding group, said it would work with GE Renewable Energy to localize wind turbine parts while participating in South Korea's government-sponsored wind power projects. "We will secure differentiated competitiveness in the offshore wind market through localization and the production of large-scale wind turbines," an unnamed Hyundai Electric official said.

In an effort to reduce the use of fossil fuel and nuclear power for electricity generation, South Korea is gradually switching to renewable energy sources. The Seoul government has endorsed a number of projects to build clean energy facilities, including solar power plants and wind farms, onshore and offshore.
