SEOUL -- A state research institute will commercialize an artificial intelligence-based stress management solution that would help business operators measure the levels of workers' stress in real-time and provide personalized methods to increase work efficiency.

The technological advance of digital healthcare services has seen rapid growth thanks to affordable wearable devices including smartwatches, movement trackers, heartbeat monitors and other small devices that monitor and record biological data in real-time through wireless connections.

Stress management is a popular digital healthcare service using wearable sensors and smartphones. However, such services are not very accurate because sensors only read biodata without taking into account external stress factors such as light, room temperature, humidity and ambient noise.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) said in a statement on February 9 that its AI-based biodata platform called "WellMind" will provide personalized stress management solutions for workers. The platform will be commercialized in a form of a smartphone app. The release date has not yet been disclosed.

According to ETRI's head researcher Kim Hyun-sook, the stress management platform is in a data-collecting process to prepare datasets that an AI system can study during its machine learning process. ETRI researchers have also completed the development of virtual reality (VR)-based content for stress control. Demonstrations are being carried out to verify the efficacy of WellMind.

Through WellMind, researchers aim to provide the real-time monitoring of stress levels and provide a guide to stress-easing activities such as listening to music, drinking a cup of tea, stretching or meditating. ETRI said the app will offer a one-stop perspective of stress levels.
