LAS VEGAS -- Hanwha Systems, a defense contractor affiliated with South Korea's Hanwha Group, tied up with Funzin, a domestic software development and edge AI solution company, to develop an edge AI system that uses machine learning algorithms to process data generated by a hardware device at the local level.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between Hanwha Systems and Funzin ahead of CES 2022 in Las Vegas. Edge AI is a core technology of an edge cloud system with high performance and low power characteristics, which is regarded as a core infrastructure of defense cloud and provides flexibility and scalability in various weapon system platforms.

"It is very meaningful that we can expand our edge AI platform technology to the defense cloud field," Funzin CEO Kim Deuk-hwa said in a statement on January 5. The edge cloud system is emerging as the core of cloud operation to overcome communication constraints on battlefields and increase data processing efficiency. When installed on combat platforms, field units can efficiently use cloud and recombine weapon systems optimized for each tactical situation, enabling rapid response.

The Pentagon is pushing for the development of an integrated cloud system that can integrate distributed IT infrastructure and operate around the world through cooperation with private companies such as Google, Oracle and IBM. "We will strengthen capabilities to build core infrastructure by cooperating with outstanding companies to explore the defense cloud market, which is expected to grow rapidly in the future," Hanwha Systems CEO Eoh Sung-Chul was quoted as saying.
