SEOUL -- In a government-sponsored project to generate electricity using the weight of container trucks, a piezoelectric power generation system will be developed and installed at the gate of a terminal port in Busan, the hub of South Korea's maritime transportation. Piezoelectric element modules will convert pressure and vibration generated by container trucks into electricity.

Busan port operators and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups will jointly finance the development and demonstration of the piezoelectric power system that would use heavy container trucks weighing up to 40 tons to produce efficient renewable energy just by passing through a gate.

While solar power generators can only produce electricity for about 3.6 hours a day, piezoelectric power generation technology can generate electricity 24 hours a day regardless of weather conditions. The new system will be upgraded to supply electricity to port lighting, unloading equipment, and electric vehicle charging stations.
