SEOUL -- LS Cable & Systems has secured a deal worth some 200 billion won ($168 million) to supply submarine cables for an offshore wind farm in Taiwan by 2025. The South Korean cable maker would try to secure subsequent orders in Taiwan, which has set aggressive renewable energy targets, with a particular focus on the development of offshore wind power capabilities.

LS C&S said it has been selected by CSBC-DEME Wind Engineering (CDWE), a joint venture between Taiwan's CSBC and Belgium's DEME Offshore, as a preferred bidder to supply cables for the Hai Long offshore wind farm project in the Taiwan Strait. The new deal brought LS C&S's cumulative orders for submarine cables for Taiwan's offshore wind farm project to 800 billion won.

LS C&S has expanded production facilities to respond more effectively to the rapidly growing offshore wind power market. "We will lead the domestic and foreign renewable energy business based on close cooperation with global offshore wind power operators in Europe, North America, and Taiwan," CEO Myung Roe-hyun said in a statement on October 6.

LS C&S has been involved in a number of projects abroad. In November 2020, the company secured a five-year deal to supply high voltage cables for offshore wind farms to Orsted, a Danish power company. Through business ties with Orsted, the South Korean company has supplied cables for the Hornsea wind farm project in the North Sea and for the Changhua offshore wind farm project in Taiwan.
