GV60 drivers can use Samsung phones as digital key powered by ultra-wideband

SEOUL -- Drivers of GV60, an electric sport utility model released by Genesis, the luxury brand of South Korea's Hyundai auto group, can use Samsung's new Galaxy smartphones as a digital car key powered by ultra-wideband technology, which is a short-range, wireless communication protocol using radio waves to operate, much like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Ultra-wideband (UWB) transmits radio waves at a much higher frequency, enabling highly accurate spatial awareness and directional capabilities that allow mobile devices to understand their surroundings better.

With Galaxy smartphones like a news foldable phone "Z Fold 3," GV60 drivers can start the engine, open the trunk and even activate personalized settings like adjusting seats and mirror positions, all through smartphones, Samsung said in a statement on September 30, adding that the key can be safely shared with friends and family members.

The solution uses Samsung's embedded secure element that protects sensitive information and encryption keys. The UWB digital key is compatible with Galaxy S21+ and Ultra, Note20 Ultra and Z Fold2 and 3. Samsung said that software updates will be made within this year to expand the use of Samsung's digital key to other models.
