SEOUL -- Kolmar Korea, a beauty and pharmaceutical company, will develop anti-aging cosmetics using probiotics, which are a microorganism with health benefits, extracted from the skin of women in their 20s. According to data released by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, South Korea's anti-aging beauty product market stood at about 27 trillion won ($23.4 billion) in 2020, up 126 percent from a year ago.

Exosomes are cell-derived substances that contain bioactive substances and assist the transmission of signals between cells. They were typically used to develop medicines and are mostly about 30–150 nanometers in diameter. Studies have begun to find out whether they can be used in skin disease improvement and hair regeneration.

Kolmar Korea said in a statement on August 10 that the beauty product maker signed an agreement with GFC Life Science, a company specializing in skin microbiome technology, and Kyung Hee University's  College of Life Sciences to jointly research and develop anti-aging cosmetics products that use probiotics called "lactobacillus plantarum."

"We will open up the era of microbiome cosmetics," Kang Hak-hee, Kolmar Korea's head of technology, was quoted as saying. Women in their 20s have twice as much lactobacillus plantarum on their skin than women in their 50s. Kolmar said that the company has succeeded in separating the microorganisms from women's skin for mass production.
