Algorithms are basically an instruction manual that contains a list of actions an AI should take in certain situations. AI in medical diagnostics has been widely researched. Based on a huge volume of medical data, an AI solution would assist doctors in analyzing and diagnosing illnesses more quickly. Commercialized AI-based solutions are used to find cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
KT joined hands with Inha University at the western port city of Incheon to research an AI algorithm that would help doctors make decisions and increase work efficiency. They would develop a solution to help doctors diagnose thyroid nodules.
Thyroid nodules are solid or fluid-filled lumps that form within a patient's thyroid. More than 95 percent of thyroid nodules are benign (noncancerous) and it is a common illness found in up to 68 percent of healthy people. Thyroid nodules can become cancerous. Thyroid cancer is less lethal than other types of cancer if treated at an early stage.
"This joint research would hold a great meaning as it will be able to provide guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid nodules," KT said in a statement on June 29, adding that the solution could work as the first step of thyroid cancer screening tests conducted at hard-to-reach places where medical personnel cannot visit frequently.
KT and Inha University would jointly develop an AI-based solution specially designed to save hospital operational costs using big data.
