SEOUL -- SK Telecom joined hands with a veterinary college to develop an artificial intelligence-based auxiliary solution for visual diagnosis. AI reads X-rays to help veterinary surgeons quickly read and diagnose images. The mobile carrier will use its 5G technology and cloud platform so that veterinarians can receive video diagnosis results anytime, anywhere.

The veterinary college of Chungnam National University will turn medical big data into non-identifying information and provide it to SK Telecom (SKT) after veterinarians attached diagnostic findings. Non-identifying information is health and other family background information which is available to the other members of the adoption process but does not include identifying information such as names and addresses.

"We will provide an innovative veterinary diagnostic service based on vision AI integration technologies such as an AI automation platform, AI semiconductors, and cloud that SKT has accumulated," SKT's tech innovation center head Lee Jong-min said in a statement on June 28.

Based on its AI automation platform called "Meta Learner," SKT learns video diagnostic data and develops AI-based image diagnosis assistance solutions. Meta-learning is a subfield of machine learning where automatic learning algorithms are applied to metadata about machine learning experiments. SKT has used Meta Leaner to develop vision AI solutions that automatically recognize photos and images and analyze them with AI to find meaningful information.

In April, the Catholic Medical Center (CMC) in Seoul teamed up with SK Telecom to develop an AI-based video diagnostic assistance solution that would reduce the burden on medical staff by diagnosing disease conditions more quickly and accurately and allow patients to receive faster treatment.
