SEOUL -- South Korea's web service company Kakao released a grocery subscription service through its popular messenger app, targeting some 46 million monthly active users. The service will provide a variety of products ranging from everyday necessities to lifestyle services such as curated accommodation.

Subscription services became popular in South Korea in 2020 due to a COVID-19 pandemic. Consumers have used subscription services for groceries including lunchboxes and meal kits, heat-and-eat food packages. Coupang, the South Korean counterpart of Amazon, provides the most popular grocery subscription service.

Kakao said in a statement on June 15 that the company released a subscription service through its messenger app, Kakao Talk. Customers can use grocery delivery, laundry pick-up, travel and accommodation reservation, and other products that are curated to match each customer's preferences.

"We have developed this service as a medium that will not only have customers buy and own products, but also vibrantly change our customers' everyday lives," an unnamed Kakao official was quoted as saying. Users are not required to install an additional app. They can access the subscription service through their Kakao Talk app.
