Ulsan City will provide administrative support. SK Gas is in charge of hydrogen supply. Korea East-West Power, a power supplier affiliated with South Korea's state electric utility KEPCO, will demonstrate a turbine and convert an old turbine at a combined cycle power plant in Ulsan into a hydrogen turbine. Doosan Heavy will develop a turbine and supply a demonstration plant for mixed hydrogen combustion power generation.
"When the hydrogen turbine development project is completed, it will pioneer a new paradigm for the national infrastructure industry and the hydrogen economy will be more active around Ulsan City," Korea East-West Power CEO Kim Yong-moon said in a statement on June 3.
South Korea has presented a goal to commercialize a 300MW homemade hydrogen gas turbine by 2040. As a bridge power in energy conversion, a standard model of gas turbines for liquefied natural gas power generation will be developed. A task force involving private companies, state bodies and research institutes has been launched to push for the early commercialization of gas turbine power generation.
Policymakers have described independence in gas turbine technology as an important task in terms of energy security. All 149 gas turbines operating at power plants in South Korea are from overseas Companies. Gas turbines have become one of the most widely-used power generating technologies because they reduce the emission of fine dust and other air pollutants.
