SEOUL -- South Korea's biggest web service operator Naver and a state research institute joined hands to establish an artificial intelligence research center that focuses on the application of hyperscale computing. The research center will pump up AI development capabilities and nurture young researchers.

Hyperscale computing is massive-scale computing that is normally incorporated in the processing of big data and cloud computing. The technique is ideal for running infrastructure for information technology services offered by global companies such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft.

Naver said in a statement on May 24 that it would work with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) to establish the  "KAIST-NAVER Hypercreative AI Center." Financial and other details were not disclosed. The hyperscale-based AI research center will involve some 100 researchers from Naver and KAIST to develop hyperscale AI that will allow creators full of brilliant ideas to conveniently create multimedia content.

"Naver and KAIST will contribute to the improvement of South Korea's competitiveness in areas of AI technologies by successfully carrying out development projects for hyperscale AI and creative AI," Naver's chief operating officer Choi In-hyuk said. Naver would unveil the first hyperscale AI model on May 25. To beef up its hyperscale AI development capabilities, Naver partnered with Seoul National University on May 10.
