SEOUL -- South Korea's mobile carrier LG Uplus partnered with Ace Technologies, a domestic wireless communication technology developer, to develop a 5G antenna module for the business-to-business service market. The module can upgrade the data transfer speed of a 5G communication network for drones, smart factories, and other network-based businesses at a lower cost than adding more antennae.

Unlike 5G-based business-to-consumer (B2C) models designed for smartphone users, B2B network models are designed to cover small areas and provide super-fast data connection for smart factories and control towers for drones through dedicated local infrastructure. It is a pricey job for a private company operator to expand the area of 5G coverage. When a 5G antenna is added, it also needs time to be tuned and optimized for actual operation.

LG Uplus (LGU+) said in a statement on May 5 that it has worked with Ace Technologies to develop a high-performance 5G antenna module using monocone technology. The mobile carrier said that the module can be attached to an existing network without having to be tuned. The monocone technology allows the module to transfer data up to 10 percent faster than ordinary B2B 5G networks.

Digital transformation, a process of converting analog-based work processes into an automated digital one, has become the world's trend in the business sector. According to data released by Polaris Market Research, a global market research firm, the global 5G-based B2B market is projected to stand at $13.9 billion by 2028.

"Because the module does not need to be tuned or tweaked, 5G device makers can save tens of millions of won for the development of antennae and save time," LGU+ said, adding the module would be upgraded to support millimeter-wave (mmWave) bandwidths for wider coverage and target the global market.
