The tie-up began in November 2020 when a pilot service using LG's closet-type service robot called "CLOi ServeBot" was launched at LG's research and development complex in western Seoul. When orders are made through a smartphone app, the robot carries groceries up and down between floors using elevators. The robot can carry a payload of 15 kilograms (33 pounds) with its closet using a built-in lock and security system to prevent robbery.
LG Electronics said in a statement on May 4 that a robot grocery delivery service was introduced at GS Tower, a landmark building in Gangnam, a finance and fashion district in southern Seoul. A CLOi robot carries lunch boxes, drinks and snacks.
LG said the robot's status and delivery information can be monitored and managed through an integrated control tower system. "By following the trend of the increased non-face-to-face service market, we will continue to develop robot service solutions to provide our customers new experiences and values as well as help in everyday situations," said LG's robot business division head Noh Gyu-chan.
South Korea accelerated the development and commercialization of unmanned delivery services when it was hit by a coronavirus pandemic in 2020. Woowa Brothers, the operator of the country's top food delivery service app Baedal Minjok, is the frontrunner in the automated food delivery service sector.
