SEOUL -- Using an established network run by a state postal service, a major online shopping mall operator has launched an overnight delivery service to catch up with Coupang, the South Korean counterpart of Amazon, which has cemented its leading position in the market.

Overnight delivery services became popular in South Korea in 2020 when people shopped online instead of visiting crowded shopping malls to prevent COVID-19 infection. To save time and costs, overnight delivery service operators manage logistic centers packed full of popular products. When a customer makes an overnight delivery order, the item can be delivered quickly from a nearby logistics warehouse.

11STREET said in a statement on April 14 that the company partnered with the Korea Post to provide an overnight delivery service for some 1,000 popular products from 23 brands, including many daily necessities such as food, sanitary products and health supplements.

"When a customer makes an order, an item will be shipped from Korea Post's logistics center in Daejeon," 11STREET said, adding its service would be supported by the postal service's delivery infrastructure.

According to a survey of 1,169 online shopping service users, conducted by the Korea Information Society Development Institute in 2019, more than 70 percent of consumers ordered products using an overnight delivery service. 21.5 percent used overnight and instant delivery services regularly. Fresh and frozen foods were the most popular items, followed by daily products such as diapers and toilet papers.
