SEOUL -- South Korea's Hyundai auto group has forged a strategic partnership with Uber, an American car-hailing service operator, to beef up mobility services using electric vehicles in Europe.

The goal is to increase the adoption of electric vehicles and the expansion of charging infrastructure in major European cities, Hyundai said in a statement on April 12. Uber drivers will be given discounted access to electric vehicle models in European countries including Britain, France, and the Netherlands.

"Through this exciting partnership, we will utilize our leadership in electro-mobility to help Uber’s partner drivers make the switch to BEVs (battery electric vehicles) and help electrify their customers' journeys in Europe," Hyundai Motor Europe CEO Michael Cole said.

Uber has disclosed its plan to go completely zero-carbon by 2030. The mobility service operator said that 50 percent of the distances covered by Uber rides in Europe will be driven by electric vehicles by 2025. Customers can select the option of riding a zero-emission vehicle when hailing a ride.

"We are advancing the electrification of our platform across Europe through a new strategic partnership with Hyundai, making it easier and more affordable for drivers to switch to one of Hyundai’s leading electric models," said Anabel Diaz, regional director for Uber's Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

To establish electric vehicle infrastructure at home, Hyundai revealed an ultra-fast charging service platform "E-pit" in March. The platform inspired by a pit stop of Formula 1 race circuit will be installed in some 20 expressways service areas.
