SEOUL -- A digital think tank in Seoul will use big data to solve an ever-worsening traffic jam in and around a giant public wholesale market, which is about the size of 76 football fields. Congestion has caused inconveniences for customers, shop owners and nearby residents.

Garak Market operated by Seoul Agro-Fisheries & Food Corporation is located in southern Seoul. The volume of daily transactions surpasses 8,000 tons, causing serious traffic congestion in and around the complex.

Seoul Digital Foundation said in a statement on April 2 that the think tank signed a memorandum of understanding with the Garak market operator to address inconveniences by analyzing big data. They will start collecting data in April on traffic congestion.

Big data is widely used in South Korea to detect, analyze and solve public problems. In December 2020, KT partnered with state railroad authorities to use big data and improve customer services and management systems.
