SEOUL -- The modular construction unit of Kolon Global, a civil engineering and architectural firm in South Korea, tied up with a domestic robot innovation company to expand the application of quarantine robots in medical and construction areas. Kolon has assembled South Korea's largest modular negative-pressure ward cluster.

Kolon Global said its subsidiary, Kolon E&C, signed a memorandum of understanding with Hills Engineering, a robot innovation company that has produced quarantine robots. They agreed to find new business opportunities for quarantine robots by converging their business capabilities and expand their application to the construction sector.

Hills Engineering will customize robot technology to use quarantine robots in hospitals and construction fields, integrate new technologies and develop new products to expand the business scope of modular construction. Kolon E&C creates business opportunities in areas such as negative-pressure wards.

In October 2020, Kolon built a three-story modular negative-pressure ward cluster with 30 rooms for a state hospital in Seoul. The modular ward can be operated as a single unit that consists of multiple wards and air purifiers. Negative-pressure wards play a vital part in COVID-19 screening and treatment as it prevents cross-contamination inside an enclosed space by creating a constant flow of purified air through special filters.
