SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics has been selected as a 5G network solution provider for NTT Docomo, a leading mobile operator in Japan, garnering a bigger share in 5G equipment and infrastructure markets in Asia and other regions.

Samsung said in a statement on March 23 that it would support Docomo with its innovative 5G technology to bring enriched 5G services to users, advance digital transformation for businesses, and improve society at large.

"We are excited to collaborate with Samsung for the next phase of 5G Open RAN (radio access network) and accelerate the expansion of our lightning speed 5G coverage in the nation," said Sadayuki Abeta, general manager of Docomo's radio access network development department.

Samsung is taking active steps to expand its share in the global telecom equipment market. In September 2019, Samsung's equipment was picked for KDDI Corporation, a Japanese telecoms operator. The deal with Docomo came a week after SaskTel, an ICT provider in Canada, selected Samsung as the sole vendor to provide hardware, software and associated expertise for the deployment of an end-to-end 5G solution.

Samsung has delivered 5G end-to-end solutions ranging from chipset, radio, and core to cloud platforms. It became a competitive player in North America's 5G equipment and infrastructure market following the expulsion of Huawei, a major player in the global market for 5G equipment.
