The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) said in a statement on December 28 that some 160 SMEs used the watchdog's internet test facility this year to save about 5.8 billion won ($5.2 million). An ordinary private test facility with similar equipment would cost 3.7 million won ($3,376) per day to rent while the watchdog charges 35,000 won.
KISA's test facility connected to a 100Gbps internet connection is ideal for processing large-sized data traffic. It has eight laboratories and 194 test equipment so that SMEs can research and develop internet technologies including high-performance network security devices.
An internet connection testbed is basically a separated network environment that simulates actual networks. Researchers can freely attack, defend and alter network figurations without the risk of damaging real-world internet networks.
South Korea has the world's highest average internet speed of 76.75Mbps, according to the Korean Culture and Information Service. Many private users are hooked onto optical internet lines that support up to 1Gbps, which is fast enough to download a high-definition video file in just a few seconds.
