SEOUL -- The western port city of Incheon has opened dog care centers for COVID-19 patients who have to enter hospitals or temporary "life-care" community treatment centers for treatment that would require several weeks of parting.

Incheon said that it became the first city in South Korea to open 10 dog care centers when their masters infected with a new coronavirus stay away for treatment. COVID-19 patients can request local community health center officials to pick up their pet dogs for accommodation at care centers. A fee of 35,000 won ($28.6) will be charged per day.

"There were many cases in which single household COVID-19 patients have felt awkward because they did not have a place to provide care for their dogs," an Incheon official said, adding that pet dogs would be looked after at safe places so that patients can only focus on recuperation.

Pet care centers are being operated by private and government-operated animal care centers around the world after the COVID-19 pandemic began in February. The centers provide food and exercise activities while their masters receive treatment at hospitals for a small sum of fee.
