[CES 2020] CES becomes propaganda arena for AI

SEOUL -- "Now, a battle for the commercialization of artificial intelligence has begun."

Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020, the world's largest technology exhibition which runs in Las Vegas for four days from January 7, is expected to become a battlefield for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that involve not only companies from South Korea, the United States, China and Japan but also global companies. Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, SK, Daimler, Toyota, Intel, and Qualcomm will show off AI technologies as their core product.

According to industry officials, Daimler, Toyota, Intel, Qualcomm, and LG Electronics will introduce AI technologies at preliminary events on the eve of the annual trade show organized by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

In fact, automakers such as Toyota and Benz will provide future insights based on their belief that the forefront of AI lies in autonomous vehicles.

"In addition to the existing mobility platform e-palette, we are unveiling micro palettes. We will announce Toyota's mobility plans including AI-based LQ and micro-mobility products (Walking Area BEV)," said Toyota which will disclose the direction of investments by its Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm, AI Ventures, and reveal the ​​portfolio of AI companies that have received investments.

Daimler also focuses on AI as the topic of its CES 2020 keynote speech on January 6 (local time). Daimler Group and Mercedes-Benz Chairman Ola Kallenius, who took office last year, will unveil a new concept car inspired by an entertainment brand in his keynote speech. He has hinted that "man and machine will present a new way." Daimler will introduce a Benz flagship EV lineup while explaining mobility and the future of automobiles.

Large South Korean conglomerates such as Samsung, LG and SK have set their themes based on "lifestyle-matching AI."

Samsung will unveil its next-generation AI service "Neon". LG plans to demonstrate "LG ThinQ Zone", an expanded version of the company's AI platform "ThinQ" that breaks down the boundary between outside and inside areas of a home while connecting devices to services.

SK Group units, which will operate a joint exhibition booth, have established a concept of "AI + 5G". At CES 2020, the group will unveil AI-based HD map live update technology and 5G mobile edge computing (MEC).

Startups are also attracting attention. CyberLink, based in Taipei, will show the technology that can identify emotions from faces using an AI-based camera through "FaceMe" technology. Pizza robots capable of creating 300 pizzas in an hour and puppies who take care of the elderly with dementia were created based on AI technology.
