SEOUL -- SK Energy, a refinery arm of South Korea's SK Group, will provide charging services for electric vehicles at 11 gas stations in August. The company would use chargers capable of charging a 60kW-class electric vehicle in about 30 minutes.

Despite state subsidies and other benefits, consumers are still reluctant to buy EVs mainly due to the lack of charging stations. The circulation rate of an EV charging station is not as fast as a gas station. An EV requires up to five hours to fully charge with ordinary chargers and about 30 minutes to charge 80 percent of its battery with fast chargers.

For chargers near worksites, shopping malls and tourist spots, Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO), a state utility company, has launched a franchise brand last month. Using a dedicated smartphone app, EV owners can find charging stations and enjoy a one-stop digital transaction system.

CJ Hello, the internet and telecommunication service wing of CJ, has forged a partnership with Posco ICT, the information technology wing of South Korea's top steelmaker Posco, on July 4 to set up EV chargers at apartment complexes for consumers.
