SEOUL -- South Korea's top telecom company, KT, partnered with a local car black box company to develop a new service, based on its Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT), that was linked with a smartphone app to check various vehicle-related information in real time.

KT said Tuesday that in cooperation with mBrain, a car black box startup, the company has integrated IoT GPS function into a car black box. NB-IoT, which enables a wide range of cellular devices and services, is deemed more power-efficient compared to cellular IoT, and cheaper modules offer wider coverage that allows the deployment of low data-intensive services and cheaper costs.

The new system allows users to view information such as vehicle position and battery status and supports the real-time monitoring of speeding violations and safe operation. KT said its NB IoT application for safety has been extended to mobile objects.
