SEOUL --  Samsung Electronics, the world's largest microchip producer, released an ultra-fast and durable portable solid state disk (SSD) drive featuring Thunderbolt 3 connection to meet the needs of tech-savvy consumers or professionals who want the fast processing of large data files.

Demand for high-performance portable disk drives has been growing among photographers, video editors and other professionals to handle big raw video data files that easily exceed a few gigabytes.

Samsung said its new portable SSD called "X5" with a Thunderbolt 3 connection would save the "valuable time" of users. X5 is fitted with a Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) SSD, which is smaller in size than conventional flash drives.

Thunderbolt 3, an interface developed by American tech company Intel, allows users to transfer or process files up to about 25 times faster than a widely used portable hard disk drive (HDD).

X5 is encased in a rugged housing which can withstand accidental drops of up to two meters (6.6 feet) and features a special heat sink to prevent overheating, a common problem found in SSDs. The new product will be available worldwide from September 3 with its 500-gigabyte model carrying a price tag of $399.99 and the two-terabyte model $1,399.99.
