Hallstatt is a picturesque little town nestled by Hallstatter Lake in Austria. The region was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.

From the parking area, when you walk up toward the entrance of the town, it is easy to see why it was included in the UNESCO list. The captivating beauty will dazzle any visitors.

As you walk along the narrow main road to reach the heart of the village, you see swans silently gliding along the lake, adding the fairy-tale-like-charm to the scene.

The beautiful town is also famous for its salt mines that date back to the Neolithic Era, making them the oldest salt mines in the world. The salt mines are still being worked and it is the popular tour destination.

One more unique thing about this cute little town is that it has an ossuary in a parish church or Pfarrekirche Maria Himmelfahrt perched on rocky terrain overlooking the lake. The each skull has a painting and initials as identifications. Outside of the ossuary is an active cemetery that looks like a little flower garden. It has a spectacular view of the lake and an iconic mark of the village, Hallstatt Lutheran Church.

There are many cute restaurants and shops to check out especially around Marktplatz. Give Hallstatt a good half a day to fully enjoy the picturesque little town.

If you are an avid hiker, check out the trails around the town.

The best way to wrap up a day in Hallstatt is to rent an electric boat to go out on the Hallstatter Lake. Enjoy the breeze and soak in the beauty of Hallstatt.
