A 25-year-old graduate student accused of parcel-bombing his professor confessed that his attack was a copycat of the suicide subway bombing that killed 16 people in Russia in April, police said Wednesday.

The student identified by his surname Kim told investigators that he was inspired by the April attack blamed on Islamic terrorists to create a bomb for himself at his homestay room.

The explosion on Tuesday was not strong because Kim produced a makeshift bomb using a metal tumbler filled with explosives and tens of small bolts. It only injured a 47-year-old professor at Yonsei University's School of Mechanical Engineering.

Kim insisted he had no intention of killing the professor, police said, adding the bomb recipe allegedly came straight from his head. Police arrested him Tuesday night after checking security camera footages in the school and near his home. As evidence, one of his gloves used to make the bomb has been retrieved.

The professor told investigators that the bomb exploded when he opened a parcel inside a shopping bag hanging on a doorknob of his lab.
