South Korea's largest telephone company KT has opened a cloud data service center for the 2018 Winter Olympics in the eastern ski resort of Pyeongchang.

KT said the "2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics Primary Data Center" would provide cloud services covering entire Olympic events for the first time in the history of sports games.

The data center in a KT building in Seoul will collect and process game results, International Olympic Committee data and information, referee judgment and data related to Olympic operation.

Data centers at the previous Olympics were connected to a network but were slow in processing data.  They were also expensive to operate.

"KT's security technology and superb cloud center will provide the most successful Olympic data network," said KT vice president Oh Sung-mok.

For its service, KT has connected its servers, networking devices and network surveillance equipment near Pyeongchang some 130 kilometers (80 miles) west of Seoul to an independent cloud network that would strengthen security.

The center will provide its service for the Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang. KT plans to pass its know-how, software, network infrastructure  to the operators of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
