Intel, one of the world's largest chipmaker, has acquired Nervana, a startup which is specialized in developing artificial intelligence (ai) for processors and developS "Nervana Engine", a dedicated AI hardware accelerator slated for debut in early 2017.

According to IT specialist media Engadget, Intel has revealed its ambitions on how it would use Nervana Engine. Intel kept its reputation as the powerhouse for server processors "Xeon" and "Xeon Phi" and wishes to boost its artificial intelligence (AI) ability with the startup's knowhows.

The specialist media also noted that Intel's buyout could work as a preparation for a counterattack against NVIDIA, a leading graphics firm which has been developing AI in self-driving cars and graphics chipsets.  For many years, Intel has been spurring in on upgrading its own onboard graphics and Nervana could help Intel close in on the gap with NVIDIA.

Onboard graphics are graphic chipsets included in the main processors and do not require an external graphics chipset. Considering that it is basically free, Intel's onboard graphics chipset have received great feedbacks from customers for their performance and power efficiency. Though not as powerful as NVIDIA's graphic chipsets, Intel's onboard graphics are powerful enough for everyday office work and most PC games.
