A 71-year-old man set fire on a subway train on line 3 in southern Seoul on Wednesday, police said.

All passengers were evacuated immediately after the fire started at around 10:54 a.m. when the man, surnamed Cho, reportedly sprayed flammable liquid on a seat of the subway car and ignited it. No casualties were reported.

The Ogeum-bound train carrying about 370 passengers was entering Dogok station on line 3.

Police said they caught Cho at a nearby hospital where he was receiving treatment for light burns.

Subway workers, using fire extinguishers, put out the blaze within six minutes.

Passengers evacuated as the subway platform and cars were engulfed in smoke. Due to the smoke, trains passed Dogok station without stoppage.

During questioning, the suspect, Cho, said he attempted to commit suicide as the amount of reward for damages on a septic tank he operated 15 years ago was too small, police said.
