The government will continue to concentrate its efforts on economic recovery and job creation next year, a top government official said Monday.

In his speech during a breakfast meeting in Seoul with chiefs of 23 think tanks, Strategy and Finance Minister Hyun Oh-seok recalled that “at the previous meeting in June, we discussed the economic situation facing the country, prolonged risks at home and abroad and policy tasks facing our economy.

“As a result, we provided the economic policy framework for the second half of 2013, which is aimed at ending the nation’s long-standing period of low growth and materializing the recovery to help improve the people’s livelihood.”

Hyun said that the government's economic policy directions for 2014 will focus on "recovering the economy and creating jobs; stabilizing the people’s livelihood; and improving the economic fundamental."

He stressed the importance of economic recovery and job creation, saying that efforts should be made to make the recovery momentum created by its supplementary budget, a key part of stimulus measures, spread into the private sector next year.

Hyun said the government will make “thorough” preparations to cope with protracted risks at home and abroad and preemptively take steps for “structural reforms” in order to enhance the country’s economic fundamental. He did not elaborate.
