SEOUL --  South Korea's leading entertainment group CJ ENM teamed up with AFUN Interactive, a domestic 3D content producer, to develop virtual intellectual properties targeting global markets and support APOKI, a virtual musician created by AFUN that garnered more than 24 million views on YouTube with its first digital single "Get It Out" released in February this year.

CJ ENM, which created the Oscar-winning film "Parasite," said in a statement on September 1 that the company will support the release of APOKI's album and concerts as well as develop a selection of related merchandise. "We will expand our music-based IP ecosystem by establishing a new IP value chain through the strategic partnership with AFUN," said Park Joon-ho, IP head at CJ ENM's music content division.

Various global entertainment industries are developing virtual influencers, providing extraordinary firsthand experiences. The U.S.-developed virtual fashion influencer Lil Miquela has more than three million followers and earned $11.7 million in 2020. Japan's virtual character Imma is also widely used in corporate advertising and modeling and has more than 340,000 Instagram followers, earning $605,000 in 2020.

CJ ENM, credited with promoting Hallyu, has launched an aggressive push for content production targeting the global market. The company will open a virtual production studio north of Seoul by the end of 2021 by leveraging Samsung Electronics' microLED technology and the visual content creation technology of Epic Games, an American 3D game engine company.
