SEOUL -- Hyundai Elevator, a leading elevator maker in South Korea, will push for a smart building solution business that connects elevators, self-driving robots, home network systems in cooperation with LG Electronics which has developed various service robots.

The elevator industry is evolving into e-mobility along with the development of artificial intelligence and technological innovation that opened new business opportunities such as the automatic recognition of visitors' information, elevator calls, and delivery and concierge services in connection with service robots.

Hyundai Elevator would develop an open application programming interface (API) that can be connected with various applications and launch premium elevators that can produce various spaces and perform digital experience by combining organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and signage technologies. An open API is a publicly available application programming interface that provides developers with programmatic access to a proprietary software application or web service.

"The convergence of our open API and LG Electronics' self-driving robots and signage technologies will create synergy in various areas such as apartments, hotels and buildings," Hyundai Elevator CEO Song Seung-bong said in a statement on August 20. "The two companies will open up a new market called 'Vertical e-Mobility' together in the future."

Through the interworking of robots and elevators, Hyundai Elevator and LG would advance delivery services using self-driving robots and seek various business opportunities in apartment complexes, office buildings, and hospitals. In July 2021, an indoor food delivery service using self-driving robots capable of traveling between floors through elevators made its commercial debut in Seoul. Three robots developed by Woowa Brothers, the operator of South Korea's top food delivery service app Baedal Minjok, were deployed at a 30-story residential and commercial complex.
