SEOUL -- The transportation and logistics service wing of South Korea's Hanjin Group will kick-start a demonstration to build up the database of street images using cameras installed on delivery trucks. Filmed images will be processed for digital map and other information services including virtual reality and augmented reality.

A street view service is provided by companies including Google and South Korean web service companies, Naver and Kakao. The convenient virtual street service allows users to look at actual photographs while browsing through an online map service. Normally, photographs are updated regularly every few years.

Hanjin said in a statement on June 28 that the logistics company partnered with UOK, a domestic VR and AR solution company, to demonstrate a new street view business model designed to create and sell high-definition digital map databases. The three-month demonstration starting in July will involve delivery trucks equipped with three cameras, one dashboard camera and one camera each on the truck's left and right sides.

"This business model utilizes delivery trucks to make extra profits and data can also be used for public purposes," an unnamed Hanjin official was quoted as saying. Cameras will collect on-road information such as the location of traffic lights and light poles for digital maps. Photographs for street view services will be refreshed every two to three days.
