SEOUL -- Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering will work with a maritime cybersecurity solution provider in South Korea to develop an intelligent system that would ensure safe sailing and protect ships against ransomware and cyberattacks.

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) will conduct tests and act as an advisor to install a developed security solution on ships. "Cybersecurity technology will become more important if Level 3 self-driving ships are developed in 2025, and the smartization of ships gains speed," DS Lab Company CEO Jo Yong-hyun said in a statement on June 16.

As South Korean shipbuilders work hard to develop smart ship technologies, the demand for cybersecurity protection has grown because of the rapid convergence of operational information and communication technologies. Cybersecurity technology is designed to protect data and software from outside threats.

Smart shipping can be divided into unmanned ships ruled by an operator from a control center onshore and autonomous ships which use a computer on board that takes decisions about the route, speed, fuel consumption, maintenance and even mooring in the harbor. Level 3 refers to a remotely controlled ship without seafarers on board. Level 4 means fully autonomous.

"Commercial vessels and warships with advanced technology should be equipped fundamentally with cybersecurity technology," said DSME's special ship marketing division head Jung Woo-sung. "To this end, we will present a new marine cybersecurity paradigm through cybersecurity technology under development with professional companies and universities."

In particular, Jung said DSME would contribute to strengthening the cybersecurity of a 30,000-ton light aircraft carrier to be developed in South Korea. The shipbuilder has offered to participate in the aircraft carrier's basic design.
