SEOUL -- SaskTel, an ICT provider in Canada, has selected Samsung Electronics as the sole vendor to provide hardware, software and associated expertise for the deployment of an end-to-end 5G solution. SaskTel based in Saskatchewan, a Canadian province that borders the United States, used to be a client of LET equipment from China's Huawei.

Samsung said it would supply SaskTel with its 4G/5G radio access network (RAN) and core. A core network is a telecom network's core part, which offers numerous services to customers. "Samsung is looking forward to supporting SaskTel and providing an end-to-end 5G solution exhibiting Samsung’s ongoing global commitment to advancing a new era in 5G expansion," Samsung Electronics Canada CEO Jeff Jo said in a statement on March 16.

Samsung has delivered 5G end-to-end solutions ranging from chipset, radio, and core to cloud platforms. It became a competitive player in North America's 5G equipment and infrastructure market following the expulsion of Huawei, a major player in the global market for 5G equipment. Samsung has also secured deals to provide 5G solutions in other regions.

"The increased speeds, reliability, and capacity that 5G brings will support remote work, virtual health, and distance education, and enable SaskTel’s customers to realize the full capabilities of the latest 5G-ready devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G," said SaskTel CEO Doug Burnett.

Samsung has strengthened its competitiveness with new technologies. In February 2021, the company disclosed a new network technology called "Mobility Enhancer," which can improve the beamforming performance of massive multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) radios up to 30 percent in a mobile environment. The new technology will play a crucial role in improving mobile experiences for users in both 4G and 5G network environments.

The 5G era needs massive MIMO’s ability to serve multiple users simultaneously in a condensed area while maintaining fast data rates and consistent performance. Beamforming and massive MIMO are critical for increasing spectral efficiencies and providing cost-effective, reliable coverage. Beamforming focuses power to desired users to form beams, expand coverage and increase speed. Massive MIMO is a system with a high number of antennas that makes it far more resistant to interference and intentional jamming than standard MIMO networks which use two or four antennas.
